Stressed Out? Careful. It Can Affect Your Oral Health, Too!
A little bit of stress is a good thing. Stress can give you a headache, a stomach ache, or a feeling of being "on edge." However, too much stress could also be doing a number on your mouth, teeth and gums in ways you hadn't imagined!
|
Mouth Sores
Canker sores -- small ulcers with a white or grayish base and bordered in red -- appear inside the mouth, sometimes in pairs or even greater numbers. Although experts aren't sure what causes them -- it could be immune system problems, bacteria, or viruses -- they agree that stress, as well as fatigue and allergies, can increase your risk of getting them. Canker sores are not contagious, and most disappear in a week to 10 days. For relief from the irritation, try over-the-counter topical anesthetics. To reduce irritation, avoid spicy, hot foods or foods with a high acid content, like tomatoes or citrus fruits. Cold sores, also called fever blisters, are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are contagious. Cold sores are fluid-filled blisters that often appear on or around the lips, but can also crop up under the nose or around the chin area. Emotional upset can trigger an outbreak, as can a fever, a sunburn, or skin abrasion. At Brookview Dental, we have two very effective ways to treat cold sores and fever blisters. Professional strength Viroxyn is a topical ointment that provides immediate relief from pain and itching.

Our soft tissue Picasso Diode Laser offers another wonderful treatment option. By simply and painlessly shining our laser light over the affected area, annoying sores start to disappear. The sores heal in record time and the number of future outbreaks is dramatically reduced.

Teeth Grinding
Stress may make you clench and grind your teeth -- during the day or at night -- and often without realizing it. Teeth grinding is also known as "bruxism." If you already clench and grind your teeth, stress could make the habit worse. And, grinding your teeth can lead to problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), located in front of the ear where the skull and lower jaw meet.
Give us a call if you're concerned. Night guards, which are worn as you sleep, are one easy solution.
|
Poor Oral Hygiene
Extreme stress may affect your mood and cause you to skip regular flossing and brushing. If you don't take care of your mouth, your overall health can suffer. One of the earliest signs of oral neglect is bad breath. That's just the beginning. Continuing to skip basic oral hygiene can quickly lead to an increased risk of gum disease and cavities. People under stress often develop unhealthy eating habits, like snacking on large amounts of sugary foods or drinks. These habits increase the risk for tooth decay and other problems.
Just reminding yourself of the importance of hygiene and healthy eating may help. Boosting or resuming your exercise routine can help you relieve stress. When you feel better, you're more likely to tend to your oral hygiene and eat healthier foods. Exercise will also boost your immune system -- and that, too, is good for your oral health.
|
Gum Disease
Stress can cause an increase in dental plaque, as was demonstrated in a study that evaluated people who cared for loved ones with dementia and who, as a result, experienced a lot of stress. Long-term, the stress these caregivers felt boosted their risk of bleeding gums, which progressed, in some cases, to serious gum disease. Stress can lead to depression. And depressed patients, according to recent research, have twice the risk of unfavorable outcomes from gum disease treatment, compared to those who aren't depressed.
You can't make the stress disappear, but experts say that learning healthy coping strategies can keep gum problems from getting worse. Healthy coping is "problem-focused" and uses active and practical strategies to deal with stress and depression. Remember, eating a balanced diet, seeing your dentist regularly, and good oral hygiene help reduce your risk of periodontal disease. Make sure you brush twice a day and floss daily.

Grouchy? Maybe it's Something You Ate.
In the first study to link trans fat consumption to effects on behavior, University of California-San Diego researchers report that the fats used in some frying and commercial baking can make people more aggressive and irritable.Already linked to heart disease, trans fats are known to inhibit the body's synthesis of omega-3 fats, a process associated with reducing aggression and irritability. So, researchers speculate that eating more trans fats might boost such negative feelings and behaviors. They tested the theory by comparing dietary data on 945 adults with behavioral assessments, including self-reported feelings of impatience and irritability as well as histories of aggression.Scientists concluded that, "consuming more trans fatty acids was significantly associated with greater aggression, and was more consistently predictive of aggression and irritability, across the measures tested, than the other known aggression predictors that were assessed."
